New travel book highlights the beauty of the Chianti wine roads

Lonely Planet’s new book Epic Drives of the World has singled out the Chianti wine roads linking Florence and Siena as some of Europe’s most awe-inspiring highways.

Whether you want to sample the idyllic wines for which Italy is famous for on a family-run authentic vineyard estate or simply enjoy rolling landscapes, Chianti is a must-visit on your Tuscany package holiday. And the beauty of the Chianti wine roads hasn’t gone unnoticed by travel experts as they have recently been highlighted in the new Lonely Planet travel guide, Epic Drives of the World.

In this new book, Lonely Planet’s travel experts recommend the classic drive on the SR222 through the depths of the Chianti region. Starting in Florence, the winding country roads meander through epic countryside scenes romantically decorated with cypress trees, olive groves and, of course, vineyards. Heading south, visitors are treated to tranquil vistas that allow them to take in the glorious Chianti hill towns, which ooze history and make you feel like you have stepped back in time. There are also plenty of welcoming wine estates to visit too, where the owners are eager to show visitors their vines and wine cellars, and chat about what makes Chianti wine so truly special.

Following the SR222, which is prettiest in the springtime but drivable year-round, visitors can reach Siena, Tuscany’s hidden gem. Here, you can see the famous town square – Piazza del Campo – where the biannual Il Palio horse race is held, and see the fairytale-like Cathedral, as well as several other architectural treasures.
